Description:
Great bricked archways span the entrance to this 16 acre recreational reserve, located just minutes from the Fairhaven District on Chuckanut Drive. Inside, you’ll find plenty of parking and well planned spaces that meet the needs of any group’s athletic urges: swing sets, tennis courts, basketball hoops, and backstop, plus big yawning stretches of lawn to satisfy the unathletic urges as well. For ‘les petites’ in the family, a nicely fenced wading pool is sure to delight.

The low rise of land slopes gradually upward, allowing you to take in nearly the entire expanse of park at a single glance. The impression conveyed in its upper regions is that of a graceful wooded estate. Northern margins intertwine with the Interurban trail network and give park users an additional site for strolling or dog walking. Kids will likely find the gentle stream and fallen trees in that section as absorbing as the park’s play equipment.

Scattered picnic benches, many with grills, dot the grassy areas. You’ll schlep your picnic goods a fair distance to some, but will be rewarded by the relative isolation. Packed gravel paths make transit possible for wheelchairs. Restrooms are accessible. For special group events, three covered areas are available by reservation (Parks & Rec. Dept. 676-6985): a ‘Small Shelter’ with sink & counter; a ‘Large Shelter’ with water, lights, electricity and restrooms; and the enclosed ‘Pavilion’, suitable for dressed up occasions, includes a full kitchen.

Facilities are extremely well maintained with grounds that are handsome and groomed. Fairhaven Park is a tribute to the community, its users and certainly the staff who oversee its care. The spit and polish bearing of those bricked entry arches accurately reflect what you’ll find once inside.
