From I-5, take exit 254, then turn right onto State Street. Diamond Jim's will be on the right side of the street. Description: In amongst the industrial and commercial businesses of North State Street, looking somewhat incongruous, is a little pink triangular-shaped place, festooned with overflowing windowboxes. The entryway is squeezed in at an angle between two adjoining exterior walls, giving it the look of a vague afterthought, or something Alice might have encountered in Wonderland. Inside, there's barely enough room for one person to walk between the single row of tables along one wall and the barstools lined up along the counter. The surroundings are basic, with some nostalgic memorabilia but then, nobody comes to Diamond Jim's for the decor. People come for the food. There are lots of breakfast places around town, but Diamond Jim's is the place for enormous portions of just plain good food and an endless supply of great coffee. Breakfast is served all day. The menu offers the standard repertoire of American breakfast fare - eggs done any way you can imagine, pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy. In addition, Diamond Jim's has something known as "AFP"s (American Fried Potatoes). I tried the Mexican version - diced potatoes, with butter, garlic, onion, sausage, mozzarella and topped with salsa and sour cream. It was delicious, flavorful without being overly greasy - something for which little breakfast places can be notorious. Along with it, I tried the "short stack" of pancakes - each the size of a large dinnerplate. Diamond Jim's does lunch too. Now, I'm not a huge Reuben fan but the Diamond Reuben Sandwich was the best I've ever had. Ever. No formed, pressed corned beef here - this was the real thing, mounds of it, and extra sauerkraut was cheerfully piled on at our request. I'd go back just to get the Reuben. I've been told that the funny little pink building has housed other restaurants over the years; let's hope this diamond is forever. Written By: Tanya Perkins Map In This Category
