Head down Railroad to the water past the Seafirst bank and you should see it in the low, brick building right below the Herald.
Description:
In the past ten years, it seems that there has been an emergence of a niche market in restaurants that specialize in fast food, but with a hip, classy twist. La Fiamma is an example of an eatery that has taken pizza upscale in another addition to the downtown restaurant scene.
The restaurant is housed in a renovated brick building like many of the new businesses in the downtown area. The interior has been redone in a post-modern, industrial look, with aluminum flashing and exposed heating vents along the ceilings.
The tables follow suit with a riveted metal design -- a contrast to the finished wooden chairs and trim. Large windows make for a bright, cheery atmosphere with a view of the hustle of activity on Railroad Avenue. The menu offers lunch specials, but the restaurant is usually busiest in the evening.
La Fiamma joins the elite of pizzerias by cooking with a wood fired oven -- the hallmark of gourmet pizza. Pies come topped with the exotic ingredients you might expect, including prosciutto, cracked pepper, smoked mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and assiago cheese. Sauce bases also offer a variety as well, with the classic tomato, onion-garlic or pesto. Although the main focus of the restaurant is pizza, there is an offering of pasta, salads and soups. A few dishes out of the ordinary that might tempt the gourmet are caponata (grilled eggplant), hummus (white bean) and antipasto.

We love La Fiamma. The Sofia pizza (ask for extra rosemary) is our favorite on the menu, and the salad with the Sudden Valley dressing is also good. The lunch special with a personal pizza and the salad is a deal.

It can be a little pricey for the struggling college student, but when my friends and I want to go out for a good dining experience, we go here! I absolutely LOVE the panini sandwiches!

My wife's personal size pizza was woefully short on shrimp--really skimpy, not shrimpy! My nisoise salad was ample and delicious as I had found this entree to be in past years--see April 21, 2005 comments above.

La Fiamma is my favorite restaurant in Bellingham. Everyone talks about their pizzas, but try their pastas, they are amazing. I am a HUGE fan of the puttanesca, it is excelllent. And make sure you have room for dessert, because their ginger cookie icecream sandwich is phenomenal and feeds at least three people. I don't like gingersnap cookies so i was shy about it at first, but this dessert has to be one of the best things I've ever tasted! Enjoy!

It is my wife Linda's and my tradition to have lunch at La Fiamma when we go to the Bellingham Saturday Market in the parking lot lying just south. We enjoy the exquisite pizzas with fantastic toppings, not too much cheese, and not greasy--and the nisoise ("nee-shwaa" according to my foreign language consultant, my wife) salad with tuna and "toast points." The milder local beers on tap are great too!
The service by the mainly college-age servers is prompt and friendly. The only negatives to me are those awful aluminum chairs--hate the cold, metallic feel on my shorts-clad legs!

It had been quite awhile since I'd been to La Fiamma. I like lots of cheese and traditional toppings - I was truly bummed when Sneaky's closed. When La Fiamma first opened, I thought the pizzas were smallish, expensive, and a little too exotic. But I tried it again last night and WOW! The large pizza is enormous, there's lots of cheese, the crust is incredible, the custom pizzas are well thought out and while still a little unusual - absolutely wonderful! Kudos to La Fiamma. I'm having left overs for lunch and going back soon.
