Description:
I have given up trying to counter my family’s growing list of "Reasons to Go to Rocket Donuts". It’s difficult to argue with them when the place they want to go is so good. I have to admit that as baked goods go, the donut never used to be one of my favorites - until I tried an Old-Fashioned at the Rocket. My mouth waters just thinking about it; my teeth sinking through the sugar glaze and slight crust on the outside, to the perfect tenderness and moistness of the cake on the inside. I’ve stolen bites of my kids’ Chocolate Bismarcks and Cherry Crullers, and have ripped huge chunks off my husband’s Apple Fritters before he can put his coffee down to stop me, and they’re all the same -- fresh, homemade and perfectly mixed and baked. If really good donuts were all there were to the Rocket, that’d be awesome, but there are actually other reasons we stop in. A good cup of coffee or shot of hand-made espresso (i.e., it isn’t from an automated machine), brewed from organic, fair trade, locally roasted beans adds to our respect for the place. As does the fact that every member of the staff we’ve encountered is smiling and friendly, and nice to our kids. Vintage posters of monster and sci-fi movies from the 50s and 60s (a couple of my favorites: "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster -- beware the stare!" and "Curse of the Voodoo -- jungle terror, native fury") decorate the walls, while vintage movie trailers play on a screen in each of the two rooms in the shop. A larger-than-life sized reproduction of "Gorp" -- the robot from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" -- guards the larger room. (Beware if you have very little ones -- Gorp occasionally comes to life.) Classic pop hits from the 50s and 60s play on the speakers, adding to the upbeat fun of the shop. All in all, Rocket Donuts manages to take the essential elements of a warm, friendly well-run local donut shop that might have existed in Andy Griffith’s Mayberry, and reinvent them for modern-day Bellingham, complete with free Wi-Fi connection.
