Description:
The Royal has been a well-known landmark and evening destination for college students and ‘hamsters for quite a few years now. It’s experimented with changes in image (including a short-lived stint as a hip-hop club), but lately it’s gotten rid of all the trendy clothes in its closet, in favor of a more basic wardrobe. Simply put, it’s a bar and dance club with a largely college-based clientele.

Along with the figurative closet cleaning came some minor remodeling. When you walk into the Royal these days, you’ll find that what used to be two rooms on the main floor has become one large room, more or less, separated by the bar in the middle. The space to the right of the bar is long and narrow, and ends at the dance floor. The space on the left has a few tables and chairs for socializing, and taking a break from the dance floor. If you feel like being even more removed from the music and dancing, trot straight up the stairs. You’ll find a smaller room with a somewhat quieter atmosphere. This room has another bar counter, pool tables and even a couple card tables for playing Texas Hold ‘Em.

The music at the Royal is almost always DJ driven. They try to cycle through most genres, usually starting the set with 80s music, and keeping the crowd dancing with funk, R&B and more. Their reader-board out front on Holly Street keeps their clientele up to date on weekly specials and events, and though many ‘hamsters are long past the age of reading it with any personal interest, it remains a city landmark nevertheless.

I went here 3 years ago with my friends to enjoy a cocktail, the bouncer did not want to let me in because i was too intoxicated, i did not disagree and proceeded out the door. He then said "stay out bitch"!. which made me turn around and say what the fu>k. As i was walking out the door onto the sidewalk "Big Eddie" pushed me into the street then body slammed me breaking my leg wich required a permanet titanium rod to fix. Fuck you Big Eddie and Fuck the Royal!

I did the electrical wiring for the pool hall upstairs, and was left holding a $3k bill for the materials. I've since moved on, but never once have they offered to reimburse me. In all fairness, the partner that was involved with the upstairs remodel disappeared in the night, taking the original 9 tables with him. Live and learn, I guess.

The person who wrote this review either a) has NEVER been inside or b) knows the people who run it and is trying to help them out. This place is horrible and everyone in Bellingham who enjoys a night of fun, real dancing, and relaxation DOES NOT EVER go to this disaster of a club. The patrons are usually young and rude and looking for "a good time" - STAY AWAY!
