Heading into downtown Bellingham on Holly street, Shahrazad is on the right, just as you approach Railroad avenue. Description: Following a Bellingham tradition of great food being served in the tiniest of spaces (some of you may remember the original locations of The Little Cheerful and Mallard Ice Cream, to name a couple), Shahrazad Persian House of Kabobs is a pint-sized pocket of plenty. A long counter separates the cooking from the dining space and dominates the room, but there are around a dozen small tables at which to sit and eat. And eat is what you’ll definitely want to do. Persian food is basically Middle Eastern food, so you can expect to find yogurt-marinated chicken, lamb or falafel gyro, hummus and baba ganoush on the menu at Shahrazad. The food is reasonably priced and simple, but nicely cooked. I was impressed with the perfectly cooked and seasoned basmati rice, tender chicken and lamb, and with the fact that nothing was over salted. Although Shahrazad does a brisk lunch business, it’s open for dinner and -- most surprising to me -- Sunday brunch, too. Dinner is served every night except Monday, but Thursday through Saturday nights they serve a traditional Persian meal. This special menu changes according to what inspires the chef, but expect the food to be good. The Sunday Brunch is standard brunch fare -- eggs, potatoes, waffles and omelets, with Chef’s Specials inspired by specialty meats from the nearby Old World Deli. If it’s true that good things come in small packages, than it’s equally true that good food comes from small restaurants. Written By: Lisa Holt Map In This Category
