Head down Northwest Avenue toward the Birchwood neighborhood. The restaurant will be on your right, across the street from Yeagers. Description: Across the street from Yeager’s Sporting Goods store on Northwest is a restaurant called "La Patisserie". If you were to guess what was served there, using only the name as a clue, you would imagine French pastries, maybe some sandwiches and perhaps some soup. In a way you would be correct, but if you decide to go in and test your theory you’ll be surprised. "La Patisserie" is in fact gaining a reputation in Bellingham for being a good place to go for pho (rhymes with "duh") -- Vietnamese beef noodle soup. Sure, they still make cakes to order for birthdays and weddings (just give them 24 hours notice) -- you’ll see the display for these as soon as you walk in the door. And you can still order an American-style sandwich there if you want it, whether it’s turkey, tuna or even hot meatloaf - but why would you want to, when you can order a steaming bowl of pho instead? The last time I was there, my husband ordered his usual bowl of pho bo tai. When it arrived at the table the generous-sized bowl was filled with a rich and fragrant broth and beef, with fresh basil, bean sprouts and hoisin sauce on the side. I decided to try something different and had the chicken and wonton soup. It was delicious. The chicken broth was as rich as the beef broth, with a generous quantity of wontons drifting throughout. The menu also offers a variety of noodle and rice dishes to tempt the adventurous diner. It may seem odd at first to be happily slurping down Vietnamese beef noodle soup with French pastries and wedding cakes in the background, but think of it this way: the French controlled Vietnam from 1887 until 1954, during which time it was known as French Indochina. I bet there were more than a few French Cafés in Hanoi back then. Also, wedding cakes are just pretty to look at no matter where they are. Written By: Lisa Holt Map In This Category
