Description:
Dirty Dan Harris' Restaurant is a steak and seafood house located in Fairhaven. The restaurant takes its name from the founder of Fairhaven whose Grand Hotel burned down not more then a block away from the restaurant. Not known for his manners, Dirty Dan was reputed to be a man of poor personal hygiene and unpleasant demeanor. It is surprising that one of Bellingham's finest restaurants is named after one of its most unkempt characters.

Dirty Dan's is everything that you would expect from a fine dining establishment, choice cuts of meat, fine seafood, served with cloth napkins and several sets of silverware. They don't have fancy sauces nor vegetables you don't know the names of. What they do have is their specialty, choice cuts of charbroiled prime rib, New York steaks, and tenderloin. The prime rib is excellent. Year round they serve salmon, Alaskan lobster and Alaskan king crab plus seasonal specials.

The close quarters, low lighting levels and a split-level structure lend to the elegant ambiance. The main level is generally for the see-and-be-seen while the bottom floor is for more intimate dining. The top floor has a full bar. Be aware of the prices: unless you are celebrating another decade of living or can afford a house in the Edgemoor area you probably won't be able to dine here very often.

You will need to make reservations ahead of time for Dirty Dan's. The restaurant opens only for dinner and is usually very busy. If you have to wait, browsing around historical Fairhaven is a perfect way to pass the time.

My comment is similar to others. I made a reservation for my girlfriend’s birthday, that was supposed to have a surprise at the end. When we showed up I waited 15 minutes for a table. After we ordered, it took another 15 minutes for out mojitos that looked and tasted like the mint had been used in someone else's drink. After nearly an hour our food showed up. I had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, she had cioppino. Both were cold and flavorless, and she ended up missing the warren miller movie with stomach cramps. I tasted the seafood in her cioppino, and it was definitely not fresh. The night ended with no birthday surprise that was promised, just a rather large bill and two unsatisfied customer. When i tried emailing them about the poor experience, but the email just kicks back as undeliverable. How convenient. I will never return.

My Girlfriend and I have been to Dirty Dan Harris' twice now and we love it!!It is such a great place for a romantic evening and outstanding food! Every person is friendly and professional!! The restaurant itself is a great setting with classy dinnerware and great jazzy music! Thank you for the great service, food, and experiences!

Waited 50 min. for food. Mashed potatoes were cold, shrimps were sour and not edible. Manager comes, says, "I am the manager. I am going to make you tell me what was wrong with the food." She kept on yelling- it was the worst experience ever. I have never been so insulted in my life- and not a single word of apology.

I am quite surprised by some of the negative comments here regarding this establishment. My husband and I have eaten here many times, in fact we go once a month. We find the owner(Kathy) to be very professional and kind. She makes it a point to greet each person at each table. They remember their customers and are always making it a point to chat with you for a few minutes even when they are busy. They always fit you in even when there are no reservations made if they are able to accomodate. The food is always fresh and the specials are always very good as well. The watresses are always professonal and efficient. We reccommend this establishment to everyone we know. Our out of town friends and family love this place too. We will continue to visit this resturant and for many years to come.

Fairhaven is amazing. A down-at-heel backwater just a few years ago has been lovingly transformed into one of the most delightfully pretty and unpretentious places for a stroll, some casual browsing and everything from a latte to what might be one of the best meals I have ever had: My mother and I stopped in at a cute place with the unfortunate name of Dirty Dan's. I ordered their steak salad. The combination of the charbroiled strip loin, chunks of blue cheese and candied walnuts was heaven over a bed of greens was heaven. There may be a better salad somewhere but I can't imagine what it would be. The service was efficient without being too friendly in a "Hi, my name is Chad, how's it going tonight?" sort of way and when I expressed my disappointment that they couldn't finish things off with an espresso drink (I thought it was unlawful for a restaurant not to serve lattes in the Pacific Northwest) the owner, himself, went across the street and brought me one back. That's service above and beyond in my books. Mom loved the early-bird 6oz prime rib and we split the cheese cake dessert that came with. All in all, a delightful evening out.

OK service, friendly bartenders (but I'm a young blonde female), kind of hard to navigate and dark, but the killer for me was when my friend found a *fly* in his whiskey, asked for new drink and was told that he probably put it in there himself. I won't be back.

Wasn't too impressed with Dirty Dan's. We didn't have a reservation and were seated right away. The meat tasted "old", not aged. I had prime rib and my husband had a steak; don't think they need our business.

My wife and I dropped into Dirty Dan's a few weeks ago and found the hostess (owner) to be arrogant and insulting. She made us stand around for 5 minutes while she chatted on the phone with a friend and then acted incredulous that we had the audacity to drop in without a reservation. After she ignored us for another 15 minutes, my wife asked her if there was going to be a table. The lady barked back "try being patient". I said to my wife, let's go, this lady is rude, whereupon the lady said, I'm the owner and don't bother coming back! I had eaten there once before and found the food to be mediocre and overpriced. I recommend the Cliff House or Giuseppi's instead.

My wife and I decided to eat at Dirty Dans recently. We hadn't been in a while but enjoyed our last visit. The hostess was very gracious and found us a table even though it was busy and we didn't have a reservation. My wife's salmon dinner was fantastic and the tenderloin I had was above my expectations. On top of that our server was very professional and she helped us select a bottle of wine. We found a new favorite restaurant and will be recommending it to our friends.
