Description:
Tucked into a hillside of old growth cedar at the southern tip of Lake Whatcom, South Bay Bed and Breakfast has reinvented the idea of a getaway. This lakeside retreat in its rugged splendor is almost as breathtaking as its view of serene Lake Whatcom, nestled among the foothills.

The inn invites travelers to take in the great outdoors, nap in the hammock or venture beyond South Bay’s large wraparound porch to five acres of trails and grove. Mountain bikes, a canoe and kayak are available free of charge.

Inside, couples can cozy up to a crackling fire or watch an orange-kissed sunset from the common area’s bay window seat. There, neatly stacked are photo albums that tell the story of an old house that was moved up the road and later transformed into the grand inn that has pampered guests for the past three years. The inspiration behind the magnificence of South Bay comes from owners Sally and Dan Moore, who provide a perfect blend of hospitality and privacy.

All five guest rooms have private baths and in some rooms, couples can soak up the suds in jetted tubs. At South Bay, attention is given to detail: Special touches abound from fresh flowers, luxurious linens and terrycloth robes. During our visit at South Bay, my husband and I stayed in Trestle and noticed a flashlight on the end table -- just the ticket we needed to guide us down the hillside to the beach, where we shared a log and watched the lake ripple in the moonlight.

The absence of un-romantic distractions such as television and telephones in the rooms is a blessing. It’s no wonder South Bay has consistently received high ratings from travel guides such as "The Best Places to Kiss in the Northwest" and is quickly becoming a hotspot for weddings.

The final touch to a visit at South Bay is an amazing, hearty breakfast served in the inn’s conservatory/sunroom. Before leaving, guests are encouraged to sign the journals in their rooms. One entry reads: "Well now I know what it is like to die and go to heaven! This place is beyond my wildest dreams."
