Drive on Garden Street toward WWU from downtown. A half-a-block past Oak Street turn left into the metered parking lot below the Viking Union. Two-hour parking is available here. Take the elevator to the V.U.'s sixth floor. The gallery is out the elevator doors on the right. Don't let your parking meter run out; ticket prices are astronomical.

Description:
It is rare to come across an art gallery that is showing art for art’s sake, and has no interest in making money off its display. This is the purpose of the Viking Union Gallery at Western Washington University. The V.U. Gallery is a student-curated gallery sponsored by Western’s student body; admission is free. The gallery serves two primary functions:

One function of the V.U. Gallery is to provide exposure for contemporary northwest artists and their works to the Western community and the residents of Bellingham. The gallery is also a venue for student and faculty artists and artists from within the community and surrounding areas. It provides a professional setting for them to exhibit their work. The exhibits vary, usually changing a few times throughout an academic quarter.

Various styles of exhibits have been known to grace the V.U. Gallery, including print, paint, sculpture and mixed-media displays. The work of children has also been showcased within the walls of the gallery. The gallery is definitely a no-frills operation, consisting simply of four walls in a single, large room.

Make it a family outing or a date. Stroll through Western’s campus and check out some of its collection of award-winning outdoor sculpture. Remember: The gallery is closed Sundays and any other time school is not in session.
